Drip-drop.
Myra’s fingernails tore deep into her palm, blood splattering onto the tiled floor below. Her hair, frayed and knotted, fell haphazardly in locks across her face. She opened her mouth to say something but the words didn’t come. With an unsteady sigh, she focused on the clean white patch of bedsheet where Sean’s right arm should’ve rested.
“...ever been to one of the underwater cities? Heard that you can see whales swimming along the skyline at night, if you know where to look. Phoenicia is only a couple hours away now.”
Sean did not answer. Not because he didn’t want to, but because he couldn’t.
“Hope you’ll be able to see them. Just... strikes me as the kind of thing you’d get a kick out of.”
No matter how hard she tried, Myra just couldn’t hear him speak. Even her inner thoughts couldn’t coax the words from his mouth, not laying there as he was, silent and still. She wanted to hear his voice booming like thunder amidst the pitter-patter of a rainshower. She wanted to see his face light up like lightning as it passed through the blinds of a window. She wanted to feel his hand run carelessly through her hair like waves crashing down on a stormy beach.
“Shouldn’t have told you to chase him down,” Myra whispered, clutching onto the emerald lion that hung from her neck. “Knew you would do whatever it took to kill him, and still I asked you to do it. But I couldn’t forgive him for what he’d done to Kara… or to me. Wish I had been strong enough to face him myself.”
She clenched her teeth to force back the tears she could feel welling up in her eyes.
“Only thing I could do was send you to an early grave somewhere far from home. Might as well have taken a cleaver and hacked off your arm myself, least that would have spared us both the trouble. But I know you, Sean. Wouldn’t blame me for what happened, and goddammit, I wish you would.”
Myra violently wiped her eyes with the back of her olive green sleeve. She cast her gaze to the floor and steadied her breath, finally summoning the courage to look at him directly. A hesitant hand reached towards him, gently placing her palm over his forehead.
“Let you get some rest, alright? If I spend another minute here I think your boyfriend might start to get jealous.”
She pulled her hand from his forehead, shoving it into her jacket pocket as she stepped away from the bedframe. With a heavy gulp she turned around and marched out of the hospital ward, her other hand still holding her necklace tight.
