Kara entered the simulator room. Machines and helms buzzed around her; she could hear the muffled sound of several running simulations in the room, but she was only looking for one in particular. It was easy to find, thanks to the “LUCKY” nickname displayed. She stood in front of it and observed the screens outside; this was a basic training simulation, nothing too fancy. It appeared to run fairly smoothly, too. An artificial voice chimed in inside, muffled.
“Orion, do you copy? You’re almost there. Continue to final objective: return and land on home base.” The voice buzzed within the helm of the Hoplite. It was already set on rails towards the final trajectory of its target. The line was set straight. Even a few stray enemy machines failed in their attempts to surprise the pilot, getting gunned down into shrapnel nearly as soon as they arrived. The hands at the controls gripped the throttles, petite fingers eagerly rolling as the display showed the machine slowly making the descent. The numbers for the desired altitude were wavering for and against them, but the pilot pressed on, until slowly…a boom.
“Simulation terminated.”
“Tsk, aw, crap!” Lana’s fist lightly banged against the plate of the simulator’s controls in frustration. She made a swift exit out of the restraints, letting out a huff.
To save her from her momentary irritation was the sight of a teammate just outside. Just as swiftly as before, she made her exit and greeted the fellow pilot with a grin and a wave. “Hi hi, Corporal!”
Kara waved back. “Hey there; ‘Kara’ will do just fine on the ship.” She glanced at the sim monitors. “Came in a tad too hot there at the end, didn’t you?”
“Gahh...you were watching? I thought I was doing pretty good from where I was.” Lana gritted her teeth in a nervous smile.
“Mhmm.” Kara nodded. “Do you usually have troubles with trajectories?”
Lana’s lips pursed in discontent. “I think that might be the case, I mean...did you see my ‘faw pox’ during the last mission?”
“I did, yes. That is actually what I came here to talk about.” Kara paused. “I wanted to apologize; I realized afterwards that my tone might have sounded a bit denigrating at the moment. It wasn’t my intention.”
She raised her hands and shook her head in dismissal. “What? No, no Kara! I didn’t think you were intending anything bad, yeah? You’re the expert, after all.”
She chuckled a bit in response. “Well, I wouldn’t quite say ‘expert’ just yet, but I get what you mean.” She glanced at the open simulator and continued. “That said, I’ll be glad to help you train anytime, if you want.”
The stars above reflected their shine in Lana’s eyes at that moment, clasping her hands together with a wide, opportune smile. “Really? You’d be willing to share you training secrets with me?” She eagerly flung her hand out. “It’s a deal!”
“...They’re not really secrets, but… yeah.” Kara shook her hand firmly. “For now I have to finish preparing tomorrow’s mission, though, but after that I should be all free.”
Lana returned Kara’s shake in kind, giving it a few more eager ups and downs. “Of course, we can take care of it all afterwards - thank you Corpora-- I mean, Kara!”
“Think nothing of it. Well anyway. If you need anything, I’ll be around the bar or cafeteria; reckon it should be a quiet and cozy enough place to get some work done at the moment.”
