Asphalt, burnt rubber, and a several ton mega-hauler were a combination of things not unusual to see on the huge vaulted highways that connected the various southern cities together. After the widespread desertification of the lower states during the pre-colonial era, such structures were necessary to facilitate easy trade and transportation. Split into three streets, the topmost was relegated for personal transportation, the center for mass city transportation, and the bottom was dedicated for private mega-haulers and maintenance.
As the mega-hauler rumbled along the empty street, a beaten sign held up above the road read: Entering Arizona.
“Entering Arizona…”
The ‘cockpit’ of the mega-hauler was surprisingly comfy. It was more of a miniature command center than front seat, with a section towards the front for the driver and a companion. A narrow and stuffy walkway connected it with the other two sections: one dedicated for communication, and the other to check on the general status of the mega-hauler. These vehicles were multi-man operations, comparable to the container ships that dotted the ocean. Bunk rooms were found in each of the hauler’s trailers, of which there were two.
“...entering Arizona.”
Sitting shotgun was pilot Yuki Nakamura. Long hair bunched up in a messy bun and wearing a heavy maintenance jacket, she had managed to convince Adamaris to be sent along with the rest of the pilots. Her idea, apparently, had been to keep her and Rusty onboard the Menaulion as emergency defenses.
There were reasons she wanted to leave that ship. Most of them had to do with getting out and seeing new places, but some of them were... Personal.
She didn’t hear a response after her ‘entering Arizona’, causing her to look up from her tablet, first at the one sitting beside her- assistant engineer Daniel Bhoens, or just ‘bones’. He had been tasked with driving the mega-hauler, and he had taken to it with much gusto. Bones held onto the huge wheel with an iron grip, his tongue occasionally sticking out from his focusing. It was funny to watch, really.
Behind him in the ‘maintenance’ section was mechanical engineer Naomi Odoemene. Yuki didn't know her particularly well, but from what she could gather Naomi was one of the many maintenance engineers that kept the AAs in tip-top shape. It made sense that she would tag along to help maintain them.
Across from her on the other end of the hauler was…
“Harleen? We’re in Arizona now, should we tell the others?”
Harleen had suddenly snapped to attention at the second attempt to convey their arrival. "Yes! Absolutely, roger that!" She cried out, stumbling upwards as she haphazardly tapped to pause the music she had been blaring through her headset, patching herself into the hauler-wide communications system. A bit of a control freak, it has been the first thing she had confirmed as operational on her boarding.
"Good afternoon my American Wranglers! We've officially reached our destination, grand ol' Arizona! Home of-" She stopped to open up her dusty, practically falling apart, ancient traveling guide to pepper her announcement with something fun. "-the Arriba Mexican Grill! ...Which was atomized when the desertification of the local area commenced. Bummer."
There was a low buzz of stifled laughter from the front, with Bones giving Harleen a thumbs up and Yuki shrugging with a smile and a, ‘you tried!’ expression on her face.
---
There was little to do on the mega-hauler, the bunk rooms were not very spacious, the most the pilots had for free space was the exact area of their single. The makeshift ‘hangars’ that stored their machines were equally as claustrophobic, and those were at least busy with one or two mechanics on hand. Each trailer could store two machines, and there were exactly two trailers attached to the hauler. The first two machines were the Hobgoblin and Big Boy while the latter two were the Nemea and Meleagros.
Though many often relaxed by watching TV or browsing the internet, none of them had devices that could connect to a public network, with the exception of Harleen. In exchange, Adamaris had “convinced” Jack to share with them an archive of some of his favorite reads, which were likewise funneled into their personal devices. Not everyone was pleased.
Regardless of where they were, an update ran through their personal devices: ‘We’ve arrived at New Prescott.’.
---
As the mega-hauler pulled into city limits, it was quickly engulfed by the lower section of the city. Pulling into a designated stall they had acquired prior to their trip, it finally came to a stop. For the next… However long they were there, this would be their temporary home. Other mega-haulers were parked nearby, each with a crew at work unloading goods. Though they wouldn’t be doing that, their work would be equally as time consuming.
A number of potential locations for their new target had been given to them. Two in particular stood out: one was a hotel by the name of The Canyon. It was frequently visited by the wealthy and influential, and was home to a handful of well-known restaurants in the area. The other was a casino near the hotel, by the name of Tomorrow’s Landing. Marketed as the largest gambling arena in the southern states, it drew much of the attention the hotel did, while remaining just across the street. Though it was possible for their target to be elsewhere, these two locations were the biggest and brightest the state had to offer.
Of course, with two locations to visit and only so much time...

The long road trip through Arizona’s endless deserts had been cramped, sweaty, and altogether unpleasant to the senses. ‘All the best road trips are,’ Sean had declared, but as the mega-hauler turned into its parking spot he was the first one waiting at the door. Their rooms (if you could really call them rooms at all) were not built for someone of his stature, and the growing desire to stretch his legs had swelled into desperation.
For her part, Myra had simply slept inside her cockpit.
The door slid open with a hissss. Sean leapt outside the mega-hauler as soon as his bulky frame could wedge itself through the doorway, taking a deep breath of air as he emerged. He grinned and turned around with his arms spread wide.
“Do ye smell it, lass? That's the smell of freedom.”
“Really...? Smells more like gasoline and sawdust,” Myra grumbled, wrinkling her nose as she stepped out the door. “This whole place feels like a sauna, but I’m the cedar bench and some sweaty bald guy’s ass is planted right on me.”
“Wouldn’t be the states if ye didn’t feel smothered by some sweaty bald arsehole every waking minute of yer life,” Sean remarked as he leaned down to touch his toes. “Been a while, hasn’t it?”
“Guess so.”
Myra pulled out the vape pen from her pocket and took a sip. Her olive green jacket was already wrapped around her waist, a white tank top covering a black sports bra. “This is the part where we split up and search for clues mystery gang style?”

The first true professional outing with the new crew. Yet so far, the cry for camaraderie stenched just as much as the night at the bar. The fragrance of sweat under the arid heat could only prove that further. Nonetheless, Renardo did his best to come prepared.
First was the shirt: loose, collared, and made with a flowing linen. A few buttons were left unfastened to rest low. Equally loose were his khakis cut just above the calf, with just a small gap between that and his woolen socks. An outfit would be remiss without an accent, and the lengthy red scarf that draped on either side of his shoulders filled that bill among being functional. Lastly was the extra sheen glimmering upon his mechanical arm, primed for the sun’s rays.
Despite all this preparation, his rest in his single was suddenly disturbed as Harleen’s voice echoed throughout the haulers. They were at their destination already? And here, Renardo was actually somewhat tolerating the lieutenant’s reading selection. The designer glanced through one of the hauler’s viewpoints, sunlight painting darkness across his transitioning lenses. It was all that was much to speak of. Not much more could be said about this deserted wasteland.
The scene was, in its own little way, mesmerizing. Renardo was content to catch further of it, but there was more to think about. His sights pulled away with a slight wince, comforting the mild yet unbearingly familiar pain in his mouth as he rubbed over his jaw. “...what a shame we could not have taken first class.”
Upon their arrival, Renardo stepped out of the mega-hauler’s doors as brisk as he could. Accommodating for the steps with his cane, he scurried out just behind anyone else that wanted out. “How absolutely unnerving this landscape is.” A deep exhale as he wiped some sweat off his cheek with his scarf.
“‘Twas the orders given,” He then addressed Myra. “It would be most suitable to re-examine our roles and prioritize those assigned to the machines to the location that would be the most expedient to navigate.”
From his pocket he flashed out his handheld, looking through his personal notes. “The Canyon - the hotel - appears to have a clean face to its presentation and we may be less likely to run into less favorable names. However, it’s multitude of restaurants within it makes it a more intricate trek in successfully finding our target. It is also likely to be subject to surveillance considering the status of its regulars.”
"Meanwhile, Tomorrow’s Landing - the casino - is double-edged. Unlike The Canyon, this layout does not appear to be as taxing. Furthermore, this establishment has one purpose for all of its patrons, many of which are too occupied with their own monetary hopes to bother giving us trouble. Just as likely however, it could catch anyone with a questionably moral nose onto our track. If we don’t catch our target’s track first.”
Renardo kept the display of the notes up, eyeing those to be present for their opinions.

Val emerged alongside the others, a baseball cap shielding her eyes from the light of day while she took in the deserted surroundings. She was wearing a tank top and jean shorts, complete with a flannel shirt tied around her waist, but the outfit did little to make the sweltering air any less unpleasant.
"No matter how we do this, I just hope they have AC inside. It's baking out there."
The mechanic followed after Myra's lead and pulled out a pack of cigarettes from her pocket. The claustrophobic interior of the hauler had left her with precious little opportunities for a smoke, and she'd spent most of the trip pacing around the Meléagros and the Nemea, sticking her nose inside the maintenance operations. It helped with the nerves.
(She'd briefly considered lighting a cig inside her cockpit and letting the air filter handle it, but if the operating system's assistant found out she'd started smoking again, she would never hear the end of it.)
"More seriously, we're gonna be under heavy scrutiny in both cases. Rich people don't like it when you go around asking too many questions. We can't just barge in there and ring the front desk for Karaka. Gotta blend in first, you know?" She grinned in Renardo's direction. "You know how to play poker, fancy guy?"

"I don't know about Rey, but I've got quite the illustrious poker career," Daryl interrupted. He leaned against the rig in a tight red tank-top, the scars of his past surgeries nonchalantly on display. "Never been to Texas, but I can clean house on some Texas Hold'em too. Heaven's Door is a casino city, so I guess that makes me your casino boy." He tapped the side of his shades as he took a long inhale from his vaporizer, breathing out a thick, hazy cloud. "Got a pretty good poker face too. Never have to take my shades off."
Standing upright he brushed away a brow's worth of sweat, wiping his hand on his pants. "Fucking hate the wild west. I don't know how these Earth folks handle it."

“Think my gambling days are over,” Sean remarked as he tenderly rubbed the old wound on his left forearm. “Hasn’t even been a week since my last stay in the ‘hospital suite’. Forgive me if I’d rather kick back at the hotel and have piña coladas by the poolside.”
“And miss out on the horse races?” Myra puffed out a carefully practiced smoke ring; it quickly dissipated in the air. “Here I thought you’d want to try your luck at the arena.”
“I’ve already pushed my luck as far as it can go… and aren’t those things rigged from the start?”
“Listen, I know a fast horse when I see one.”
“They’re all fast horses,” Sean replied with increasing exasperation. “Jockeys don’t just snag them from any old farmhouse.”
“But I can tell which ones are really, really fast.”
“Yer really killing me on this one.”
He scratched at his neck, wiping the sweat that gathered along his fingers onto his a-shirt. As the others shuffled out of the megahauler Sean began to pace back and forth impatiently. Once they had all emerged, he piped up once more.
“This heat is making my balls sweat more than a sinner in a churchouse. How about we get this show on the road?”
“Maybe we should find a change of clothes first,” Myra replied, stretching out the straps of her shirt to give her skin some air. “Don’t know about you guys, but I didn’t have room to pack anything halfway presentable. Would be a good chance to scope out the city while we’re at it. Can meet up again later tonight, yeah?”
---
Bootheels clicked against the mesquite hardwood floor, spurs spinning as their wearer walked through The Canyon’s lobby. The man removed his hat and clutched it close to his heart as he leaned over the counter. His mechanical finger lazily tapped the service bell, calling on a hotel attendant who bowed slightly as they greeted him.
“My friends and I were looking for a room to stay for the next few nights,” Sean explained– as if it wasn’t immediately obvious. “I don’t suppose ye know anywhere that might accommodate us?”
“Of course.” They couldn’t immediately tell if he was joking or stupid, and the truth was somewhere in-between. “We have several two-bedroom suites currently available. How many nights did you plan to stay?”
“Hadn’t quite put a number on it yet,” he (truthfully) confessed. “Shouldn’t be any longer than a week, if that’s alright.”
“That’s no problem at all. Our two bedroom suites range from–”
“Money’s no issue,” Sean interjected, sliding his pre-paid card across the counter. “Find us somewhere with a decent view of the city, would ye?”
The attendant nodded, tapping away at their tablet to confirm their hotel room before turning to find their keys. Sean reached for one of the brochures that sat at the end of the counter and began flipping through its brightly-colored pages. He made several amused noises as he read.
“Well I’ll be damned, the pamphlet says this place has a wedding venue!” He smirked as he glanced towards the others. “Anyone in the mood for a shotgun wedding?”
---
“Howdy folks, and welcome to– drumroll please– Tommorow’s Landin’!”
The mechanical cowboy creaked as he tilted back and forth on a comically large spring. His voice sounded like it had been recorded inside a tin can, and the rust that had accrued along his joints made that theory seem all the more plausible. With a scripted tilt of his oversized ten-gallon hat he welcomed those who entered through the casino’s front doors.
“The gamblin’ halls are located straight ahead, but before ya start rollin’ the dice remember to try one of our world-famous sarsparillas at the spittoons located on both sides of the buildin’. We’ve got horse races goin’ every hour and a half from high noon ‘till sundown, so keep an eye on those schedules and make sure and place yer bets ‘fore the races begin!”
“Reckon we can make the next race if we hurry along,” Myra mused, tipping her wide-brimmed hat towards the mechanical cowboy in a display of solidarity. She wore a sunflower-patterned sundress and a pair of sandals that proudly displayed her brightly-painted toenails.
...had she gotten a pedicure since they last saw her?

Val greeted the animatronic with a tip of her baseball cap, without thinking twice about it. Only the most soulless of cowards would dare walk past without saying howdy. Her hat was adorned with a large A, which the most astute of observers would recognize stood for Arizona. (Devilish camouflage, if she might say so herself.)
As she followed Myra, the mechanic raised a quizzical eyebrow at the large screens on the casino walls, displaying the odds for the upcoming race.
"Horse racing, huh? Don't think I get the appeal. I mean, how fast can a horse really go?"
However, they didn't come to this fine establishment for leisure, as nice as that sounded. She briefly considered sneaking to the bar for a drink or two under the pretense of intel gathering, but... this was her first official sortie with the crew. Best behavior, Val.
"Besides, gotta agree with what the big man said earlier. I've been involved in enough AA races to know how sketchy the whole shebang is. So if there's big money to be made, it's not going to be at the bookmakers," Val pondered aloud. "Now, either our fellow's got an expensive hobby and spare cash to burn... or they're going to be on the other side of the curtain."

‘For a hotel that prides itself on more illustrious patrons, the decor certainly has its own rustic charm.’ Renardo pondered to himself as he followed Sean through The Canyon’s lobby, the tip of his cane tapping in a tandem rhythm with everyone else’s footsteps. He’d spend a few moments to scan the occasional group of bluebloods, keeping note of their appearances and their attire. Sean would be allowed to handle the reception for now. The brochure he commented on did catch the designer’s attention.
“It could be a fortuitous idea. Weddings are typically so saturated with drunken celebration and romantic malarkey, all sorts of things could be overheard.” He stated, unaware to what was most likely just a quip from Sean. It however got Renardo thinking.
“We should make an itinerary posthaste, and split the activities of the whole resort accordingly so we can get the full experience. If you understand what I mean.”

Meta outfolded the decorated hand fan she kept among her possessions, last taken from a street market during her last trip down south with the family. There were fine memories stored in the fold-out, but the heat kept her mind straight and focused as she peppered her speech with each pump of the fan. Her hair was tied neatly into braided pigtails that fell to her side, tucked inside her hat that she tipped as she settled in step next to the chatting boys. "In that case, we have two options. We could always find a venue to crash and hope we don't overstay our welcome when Sean and I drink them out of house and home. Or...We can honeypot it and fake ourselves a wedding, make it an open event, and drink ourselves to the floor under a work expense as long as we don't come out of it empty handed."
"You're going to be needing a bride you know. And yes, I absolutely do accept!"
Meta almost fell over as the receiver erupted with the sound of Harleen's voice, vibrating along her ear as she basically bolted head first into the conversation. "Charlot this is an official channel, radio silence!" Meta hissed back as quietly as she could, covering her mouth to further muffle herself.
"You do realize you're for all outside appearances....on vacation. You're taking a wireless call out in public, chill girl. Besides, any and all communication is secured and safe. Point is, Eva's out I will not have my future spouse talk to her darling wife in such a manner! Rey-Rey, Seannicus, either or both of you in?"
Meta grumbled, face dark red as she found herself at a loss for a come back, as she desperately prayed that Yuki was not in earshot of any of this.

“Afraid my heart is already taken,” Sean confessed, his hat clutched close to his heart. His tone was as serious as the grave or perhaps an entire graveyard. “Taken– by a lady of dark, chestnut hair and fair, pale complexion. A maiden with little need for fanciful frills and delightful dresses, but a softly elegant nature hidden deep down in her heart. A lass torn between two worlds, forced to face the very people who raised her. A warrior through and through, our bond tempered by the flames of warfare. A lady…”
Sean stole a glance towards Linnea, a mischievous smirk teasing at his lips.
“...named Gabe.”

While things were slowly, but surely getting better, Lin still felt... out of place. It was an odd tug of war between the discomfort of being out on a recon mission again, and being among trusted, stalwart crew -- she might not have known Renardo very well, but Sean and Meta were, quite literally, two pillars of comfort. Unfortunately, the discomfort won over in the end, largely in part to a few choice words, spoken by a ghost. The failed operation was getting further and further away, but still…
Her biggest blessing was the sweltering heat of the "wild west"; a quarter of Lin's mental faculties were focused entirely on not dying, though the vivid pink of her face spoke otherwise, if not alongside the light sheen of sweat on her brow. And so, she was content to lean against the nearest support and just take in the cool air while the rooms were booked, until—
"A wedding?"
Already there was talk of making plans, despite Eva’s attempts to be halfway rational. Not much point in fighting it, she supposed, even if the thought of drinking themselves under the table and calling it a business expense gave her flashbacks to Shanghai. And here she was trying to avoid that... She turned her head downwards, closed her eyes and let out a deep exhale, listening to the conversation. It was probably because of the heat exhaustion, but Sean’s spiel was growing suspiciously… familiar? No, no, there was just something about it. Dark hair, fair, fragile skin, elegant, torn between worlds—wait.
Feeling an odd warmth arise in her cheeks, Lin opened one eye, then the other – and blinked as Gabe’s name up. After a few seconds of mulling it over, she couldn’t help but let out a muted chuckle, somewhere between a sigh and a proper laugh. Good lord, the heat was doing things to her. She straightened up to give Sean as much of a normal, definitely-not-caught-off-guard look of amusement, and said with due gravitas: “Truly, a pillar of chivalry. Perhaps we can arrange a proper wedding for the two of you when we are done here, if you'd like; I am absolutely positive your would-be wife would be thrilled. And if not a wedding, then at least a cake to commemorate.” She might have been tired, quiet, and almost definitely at least a quarter out of it, but the threat/promise of a second wedding and/or cake was still there. She'd fucking do it. Watch.
With that, she turned her gaze toward Renardo, expression growing just a touch more serious and put together. “I suppose, then, that would leave you, Santos, though I wouldn’t particularly mind playing the role of husband if need be.”

It was one of those rare moments where being small had its advantages. It meant the cramped, sweaty "rooms" in the hauler were slightly less cramped (though no less sweaty). It also meant that Gabe got to be one of the last ones to leave as everyone else crowded the doors and left him behind. Win some, lose some. He stretched out in the blazing Arizona heat, looking at what felt like a whole lot of nothing, for the most part. Paint the desert-like state wasteland red and it was almost like taking a trip back home.
Funny, that.
He'd elected something simple, to fit the heat. Black tank-top, khaki shorts, and an eye-searingly purple belt with a "HOWDY" belt buckle, acquired from somewhere likely not even God knew.
From behind Sean and Lin, he poked his head up at the mention of his name. He hadn't been paying much attention, but the context was at least plain enough. "And it's about damn time we make it official, darlin'." It was amazing how much simultaneous sincerity and sarcasm could be packed into one word. "Ya promised me solid gold and a right proper diamond years ago, and yet my finger's still empty! What do ya think the others are sayin' behind our backs 'bout that?"
He gave a dramatic, romantic sigh. "Two lovers from different worlds, brought together by chance and given an opportunity for true love on a world neither of 'em were born on. Ain't it romantic? So romantic I might just throw up." He paused, realizing he'd accidentally dropped the act. "Er. Of joy, of course."

"Welcome pardners!" Came a voice within the casino. The trio were soon approached by a reasonably well-dressed man in a suit, yet still sporting a ten-gallon. Tall and imposing- looking like a bonafide Arizonan, he tipped his hat at the three, a grin following suit. "Y'all seem to be new 'round here. Name's Chester, and I guess you could say I'm your host." Just behind the man was the ever so bustling casino, with all the sounds and lights that accompanied it. Poker tables, blackjack, craps, roulettes, slot machines... And of course, angry customers: for what it was worth, Chester looked like he could knock someone's lights out.
"If games a' chance are your thing, our casino's got everything you could desire. 'Course, if you like something with a bit more kick we got the races just out yonder." Towards his left, further down the hall was the bright outside- and the rumbling of racehorses could be felt, as did the cheering of the crowd and the faint shouting of the announcers. From what they had seen the racetrack was fairly sizeable, with an equally large stable just nearby. There was a glint in the man's eye as he looked over the three, however, and he continued.
"...'Course, y'all look young and mighty. If you want something that's a bit more physical, we do got our amateur races... We run a few every day, where folks like you can try their luck. Can even bet on yourself."
"...on real horses?"
From behind the three, dressed in what must have been an uncomfortable mechanic's jacket, shorts, and boots, was Yuki. Her pitch black hair was up in a bun, and she glared at the host with her arms crossed. "That sounds awfully dangerous... You don't really waste animals that take years to professionally train on people like us, do you?"
Though his grin didn't falter, judging by how the grip on his belt tightened ever so slightly, it seemed she had caught him juuust a bit off-guard. "Well ya caught me!" The man laughed, throwing his head back and giving his knee a quick slap. "We don't use horses at all! Too dangerous for the animals. Instead we run on the neighboring track. We got old zero-g fighters that the casino modded with some anti-grav. They work just a fine under atmo, but they do have the habit of crashing into each other... Still perfectly safe, of course!"
There was a pause after he was done explaining, the man having since gotten all of his laughs out of his system. "Now, anyone still interested?"
"I'm in." Followed up Yuki yet again, stepping in front of the three before turning back to give them each a questioning look. "...well, someone's gotta come with me at least. Who's it gonna be?"
---
The hotel group was as loud as ever, and was quickly approached by a somewhat timid hotel receptionist. Not the same as before- but another. With a gentle smile, she motioned towards Sean before handing the group a handful of key cards, one for each member. "Uhm... Your room number is 32B, which is on the east side... I couldn't help but overhear something about... a wedding? If you're interested, we can reserve one or more time slots for a wedding... We do have several venues available..."
It was at this point she motioned to a map of the hotel grounds- most of it was fairly straightforward, but a few locations stood out: the restaurant on top of the building, as well as several 'extra venues' located around the hotel grounds used for a variety of events, and the various halls that dotted the building.
"Of course, I could answer any questions you may have about our hotel and the nearby amenities, if possible..."

Renardo would feel years of his already brittle lifespan begin to leave him as he watched the antics of his teammates at work, from the unabashed bromancery to the overly chipper speechcrafter blasting her voice in communications. A slow, tired groan gradually left his lips. He flashed a squint at Lin’s proposition. “I shall absolutely not play the bride. Not again. If it is such a necessary evil, then I shall be the husband myself. That is final.” His tone was nearly vitriolic - almost as if he had something to prove.
The man cleared his throat as the group was approached by the receptionist, straightening out his posture as he stood unslouched upon his cane.
“Yes, my darling and I are indeed interested in holding the ceremony here at your lovely hotel. I would like to ask if you happen to have a schedule of other events to happen in the next coming days, as well as if you have any venues with particularly open space and closed walls at a minimum. My love is...a tad enthusiastic about others being able to see the party from afar.”

"Yo!" Daryl sidled up to Yuki and the race promoter. "I usedta race in the Crisium Cross Youth Division. Took home the Gold Cross twice! Sure that was a handful of years ago, but it's basically the same thing. Well, in the Crisium Cross if you fucked up really bad you could die. No oxygen. Out here that's not a problem though."
He flashed a self-assured grin at the two of them. "If you wanna win some money, I'd recommend betting on yours truly."
